experience, is qualified to perform that duty
safely and properly.
OH&S 14.23 (1) Every
operator of materials handling equipment shall be
instructed and trained by the employer in the
procedures to be followed for:
- the inspection of the
materials handling equipment
- the fueling of the
materials handling equipment, where
applicable
- the safe and proper use
of the equipment
There is a great potential
for property and material damage, as well as
injury, to the operator and those working around
lift trucks. Be proactive and train your operators.
To those who are new lift
truck operators, this course will introduce you to
the principles of safe lift truck operation and
hazard recognition that may be unfamiliar to you
.
For experienced operators,
this course provides a chance to refresh your
knowledge and add to it so that you may become a
more proficient operator with greater hazard
recognition skills.
The objective of this course
is to produce a professional lift truck operator
who will help to ensure a safer workplace for
everyone.
The Occupational Health and
Safety Act clearly outlines the legal requirements
for a lift truck and its operator. Here are a
few examples of the operators legal
responsibilities;
- need to be competent
person
- guide when vision is
obstructed
- not
overloaded
- secured against
accidental movement
- report
defects
- no passengers
- no load over
workers
- storing cylindrical
objects
- live power lines
These examples are just a few
of the many legal responsibilities that employers
and workers are faced with. (To view the list of
responsibilities in its entirety, refer to
the Occupational Health and Safety Act.)
Training your employees is
merely the beginning of enhancing your due
diligence efforts. Employees need to be
periodically monitored and evaluated. Documentation
must be filed in order for the due diligence
defense to stand up in court
